Facts & Controversies Ep. 3: NIKE DUNK SB PIGEONS (The shoe that launched a thousand stones)

NIKE DUNK SB 'PIGEON'

okey exaggerate yung sub title ko hehe well its not really a thousand stones but a riot broke out ni NYC just for this shoe. But what the hell why all the riot for this damn shoe?! grabe ganun ba to ka rare kaya nagkakagulo sila? is it the HOLY GRAIL of all Nike Dunks? ganun na ba kadesperado mga tao para magpatayan sa sapatos na to? look at it simple lang naman ang design nothing to crave about di ba? may pigeon lang naman sa heel, alangya dito satin daming kalapati! hehe. Pero personally i like the shoe because Gray is one of my favorite color plus orange accents this colors probably are one of factors that make this shoe a classic one. Bihira ka na makakahanap neto all over the world or maski sa EBAY kasi mismong mga nakabili neto eh ayaw nila ibenta ulet! now that's what we call rare! kung makahanap ka man ubos ang laman ng wallet mo. Makakita ka man ng Fakes $800!!! no friggin way im gonna spend 800 bucks for a fake! Thats what made this shoe one of the most expensive Nike Dunks ever and also one the most controversial in the sneaker culture.

Okey here's an interview with JEFF STAPLE of STAPLE DESIGNS (the one who designed this shoe) regarding his thoughts on the controversy over one of his classic creations.

(from sneakerfreaker.com , pictures courtesy of sneakerfreaker.com)

*How did the Pigeon Dunk come about?

My good friend Marcus who used to run things at Nike SB, asked us to create the NYC Dunk that was to be aligned with the White Dunk show. If you remember, there was a Paris, Japan, Cali, London one etc, etc. So he asked us to work on the NYC one. Of course it was a great honor. To be able to bless the seminal shoe, The Dunk, and represent our home town all in one project was just a dream come true. After sitting around and thinking for a while about what represented NY best, the Pigeon kept coming up. It’s something very innate to New Yorkers. And something you wouldn’t necessarily relate to the city if you didn’t in fact live here.

*When were they released and how many were there?

Feb 22nd, 2005. 150 for the world. 30 pieces for 5 shops. Rival, Supreme, Recon, KCDC and us. Our 30 had a lasered Staple logo and each was individually numbered.

PIGEON DUNK INTERVEW (SNKR FRKR VAULT)

*And tell us the story about the days leading up to their release?

Leading up to the release day was pretty crazy. We had kids sleeping outside in tents about 4 days before the release. There was a snowstorm as well so I was pretty impressed and dumbfounded at the same time. But for the most, the kids were calm and orderly.

*At what point did you realise there was a major problem?

I thought it was going to be pretty chill. When I left work the night before, there were maybe 20 kids waiting outside that night. It wasn’t until I came to work the next day that I realized there was a problem on our hands. There were about 100-150 kids now. With bodies pressed up against our front gate it looked like there was a Manchester United game going on inside. About a dozen cops were already there. The NYPD was like, ‘What the fuck is going on here?'

*Did you ever, I mean ever, in your wildest dreams think it would go as crazy as it did?

Never. I was totally shocked.

*It sounds funny now but were you scared at all?

I was scared the whole time! There was no way we could satisfy everyone. We had 30 pairs for our allotment! With 150+ people, you knew there was a problem. I had a security team, the NYPD, my staff... nothing could make these people happy. We were seriously, without any exaggeration, on the verge of a full-blown riot scene.

*I heard the cops were giving out summonses for trespassing and weapons were found?

About 10-20 arrests were made. I must say the NYPD was so dope about the whole thing. They were very understanding and helpful in fact. After the crowd cleared, we found machetes and baseball bats!

*I also heard they made everyone get a cab home, because hoods were waiting for the kids on the other side of your store?

Yeah, the Lower East Side is no joke. There were thugs on all four corners waiting to grab kicks from kids who were waiting in the line. The cops saw this. So they called a fleet of cabs to our back door. Kids would come in thru the front, buy their pair, and then be escorted thru the back right into a cab and off they went. One kid didn’t have enough for the cab fare and the cop paid for him. That’s the NYPD servicing the community if you ask me!

*Does it seem funny to you that anyone would pay 2000 bucks for a Dunk with a pigeon on it?

No. To each his own. That kid who paid 2Gs for a Pigeon probably doesn’t understand why someone would pay 3 million for a Picasso. Or $10,000 for a Tiffany watch. Everyone has their fix.

PIGEON DUNK INTERVEW (SNKR FRKR VAULT)

*What was Nike’s reaction to all this? Were they there for the event?

Love and Hate. Some people loved it, some people hated it. Thing is, some people thought we orchestrated and planned the whole thing. It was on the cover of the New York Post the following day... so I guess people thought we paid for that. Trust me, my life was in danger for most of that day. I don’t need press that badly. I just tell people at Nike who were pissed, ‘Would you rather that cover have a Reebok on it? That’s what I figured.’

PIGEON DUNK INTERVEW (SNKR FRKR VAULT)

*What do you think the Pigeon says about sneaker culture in 2005?

It’s reaching critical mass. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone can top this. I’m not tooting my own horn or anything... I’m just saying I wonder if this is the nail in the coffin for sneaker culture. Or will it continue to be bananas?

*It’s kinda nice to have peeps go so nuts to get your shoes, but did it make you feel sick as well?

Yeah it did. When those kids were sleeping outside in a snowstorm, I felt bad. I wanted to buy everyone a pizza or something. Then I realized... wait, these guys are waiting here so they can drop $300 on sneakers! They can buy their own damn slice!

PIGEON DUNK INTERVEW (SNKR FRKR VAULT)

*Well it was such a big success, what else have you got planned?

Now you know we can’t say. But some cool things are gonna drop in 2006. The Pigeon was only a clue in what’s to come. I’m really shocked because some people already figured it out! Sneaker heads are mad observant.

*What’s the current street price for a pair?

$2000 and up, with fakes running $800 and up.

PIGEON DUNK INTERVEW (SNKR FRKR VAULT)

*How long until the fakes appeared? The embroidery is a great copy!

Not sure... but I started seeing them on eBay about 2 months after. The Chinese are very ingenious!

*Have you run into anyone who’s been rocking fakes?

Yeah... I was art directing a photo shoot for this famous basketball player. His assistant was all amped about the fact that he was getting Pigeons from eBay he just won. He showed me and I didn’t have the heart to tell him he just bid on fugazies. Hope he’s not reading this.

*Can you hook me up with a pair? I know you guys got spare pairs under the table somewhere. C’mon, help a brother out!

I’m disappointed I didn’t save one pair on ice. I just have the one I wear. I guess I felt like if I did, I would jinx myself and we would never be able to do another Nike collabo. I’m very superstitious.

OH PIGEONS!

SCHOOLED Ep. 1: NIKE DUNKS

NIKE DUNKS...
what is a NIKE DUNK shoe? okey let me take you down on a short trip to memory lane

NIKE DUNKS - it is a shoe that is made by NIKE in the 80's (1985 to be exact). Designed after the AIR JORDAN 1 and the NIKE TERMINATOR's "fraternal twin". The Nike Dunk has become a popular "subcultural" icon for so-called sneakerheads, or enthusiastic sneaker-collectors. Since its reintroduction in 1998, the Dunk has transformed from a basic basketball shoe into a subcultural icon and an inspiration for fashion, culture, and art. Originally designs and colorways are exclusive for college basketball for their "COLLEGE COLORS" Program. Introduced with many colorways on HIGH TOPs and LOW TOPs.

Style

The Nike Dunk SB has been offered nearly in every colorway on the planet. From graffiti artists to the skateboarding and basketball spectrums – many have created customized Nike Dunk SB tailored to appeal to their individual sub-cultures. As simple as these sneakers seem, Dunks are super hot and seemingly every hipster from east to west owns at least one pair.

Price

The SB Dunk retails on average between $65.00 - $99.00; relatively low for sneaker standards. However, since they’re popular among collectors and skateboarders alike, many stores tend to raise the prices on the shoes based on how high the demand is. This happens when a shoe is "hyped" up, or overly talked about and anticipated, therefore justifying a much higher prices by the masses than suggested retail. Hype is considered "dangerous" by many sneaker enthusiasts, due to the fact that Nike has lowered the quality of materials and manufacturing for the Nike SB Dunk since the first generation of shoes were released. When the prices of the shoes sold by stores hike higher and higher; some of the more rare, "limited", or hyped shoes sell for over a thousand dollars a pair.* Info from Nike

A Word on 'Hype'

When you buy a pair of Nike Dunks, buy them because you like the colors and overall style of the shoe, not because they are hyped up on countless blogs. Usually, that same colorway will be re-created under a new name with a slightly different edge or different colored laces. Often, it will occur only a moth or two from the original limited edition design release. There’s only so much you can keep creating using the same sneaker canvas. Think about it. Be a smart sneaker shopper. Don't buy into hype. There will always be hot sneakers coming out of Nike – and often the limited edition you may have missed a chance on will reappear as a regular edition with only a slight design variation.

Rooting into skate culture

Nike's basketball shoe line was fairly popular in the skateboarding scene, and the Dunk soon became a popular shoe for skaters due to the stability and lower profile sole which improved grounding performance. After some time, Nike created a Dunk specifically for skateboarders, known as the Nike SB Dunk. It features an extra-padded "puffy tongue" (common among skateboarding sneakers) and Nike's patented Zoom Air insole. Since then, the SB Dunk has become a popular icon for enthusiastic sneaker-collectors, and has hit the streetwear fashion scene. Nike currently collaborates with many designers to create special edition and collectible Dunks. The popularitiy of these dunks has grown so wide that it has prompted Nike to create many other kinds of shoes specifically for skateboarding such Paul Rodriguez's, Tre's, Blazer's, and Team Editions to name a few. These shoes mimic the colorways and limited quantities of that of Nike Dunk Sb's, which increases their value and appeal.

So yan to continue regarding Dunks, Uso na to ngayon sa mga kabataan mapagirls or boys lalo pa't andaming CLASS-A or HQuality na binebenta sa Greenhills at Divisoria. Later on NIKE DUNKS were into SKATEBOARDING scene then NIKE SB was BORN, this time with padded tounges made for skate. Karamihan ng mga dunks ngayon puro SB na.

As i mentioned before, i first saw the dunks sa vid ni PHARELL then sabi ko ng nakita ko yung video niya astig nun kulay dilaw na old skool na nike.

Ika nga they can't live a healthy lifestyle without wearing NIKE DUNKS.

Crazy ei? but for a real Sneakerhead they would spend for rarity.

"MOST EXPENSIVE DUNKS sold on EBAY"

Sa NIKE DUNKS mas RARE mas MAHAL, LIMITED EDITION mas mahal. Pag nga magrerelease ng limited edition na sapatos eh people would camp out sa retail store just to get a pair, call them crazy but thats a true sneaker enthusiast. Limited edition Dunks would release 100 pairs only worldwide, sometimes mas less pa meron 24 pairs like the ones shown below (this was sold for 10,000 friggin dollars!) This shoe is a collab between UNDEFEATED and NIKE thats why its limited. Mahilig naman makipagcollab ang Nike.

Like this PIGEON Dunk (a collab from NIKE and STAPLE Design). 150 pairs made exclusive for NEW YORKERS, even a riot broke out in NYC just for this pair (read FACTS & CONTROVERSIES Ep. 3: RIOT OVER A PIGEON)

Perhaps one thing that is nice about DUNKS is you can customize it. A lot of collectors or artist customize dunks to sell it in limited quantities. Some make a Graffiti or Graphic design over it pero isa sa mga kilalang artist na nagcucustomize ng Dunks eh si MARK ONG a.k.a SBTG famous for his works on the SBTG Custom Dunks.

Overall NIKE DUNK's are one of the popular shoe in style & fashion today, from a real sneakerhead, sneakerfan, fashionista, hipsters, mapahiphop man yan o mapametal, DUNK's are their no.1 choice of sneakers. Kasi kahit saang porma pwede mo isuot eh plus the colorways are dope! Those who like 'old skool' kicks would never resist those tempting and yummy colorways. To me Dunks are one of the reasons why people today are going crazy over sneakers some appreciate it deeply some are not. For sure Dunks will definitely be an fashion icon.
so there yah go! thats for now about dunks, ill add more if there's any more news about this shoe. Pero sa ngayon ill give in my TOP 5 Favorite NIKE DUNKS.

5. WHAT THE DUNK - lahat ng dunks na design nandito na different design sa magkabilang pair.

4. NIKE DUNK SB TIFFANY - a collab shoe, premium croc leather and cool color on the TEAL sarap sa mata.

3. NIKE DUNK SB SBTG - designed by MARK ONG a.k.a SBTG, i like the lace cover plus overall i like the design.

2. NIKE DUNK PIGEONS - RARE! mahal na bentahan ngayon plus the fact i love the GRAY and ORANGE combination.

and my number 1!

and lastly my MOST WANTED SHOE: NIKE DUNK HIGH 'DEFTONES' - Lovely Green Black Combo plus im a fan of DEFTONES!

Facts & Controversies Ep. 2: AIR PENNYs

since the ORLANDO MAGIC advanced to the NBA FINALS (which they already did in 1994 with SHAQ in the lineup against HOUSTON ROCKETS which swept them to 4-0),ill be paying tribute to a phenomenal player that helped the MAGIC advanced to the 1994 NBA FINALS and also one of SHAQ's on court partner PENNY HARDAWAY...and yes he is a phenom.

ANFERNEE "PENNY" HARDAWAY

Anfernee Deon "Penny" Hardaway, the 6 foot 7 notorious point guard in the NBA...and probably one of the greatest point guards that played in the NBA. Too bad nawala na lang siya ng parang bula dahil na rin sa mga injuries nagpalipat lipat siya ng team naging MIAMI HEAT, NEW YORK KNICKS and PHOENIX Suns, but Penny is mostly known for his playing stint with the ORLANDO MAGIC and one of the key players that helped Orlando reached the 1994 NBA FINALS, too bad talo sila HOUSTON ROCKETS in 4 games in a sweep 4-0, still Penny proved himself to be one of the greatest NBA PLAYERS.

Few Info about Penny: Originally he was the 3rd pick of GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS in the 1993 NBA DRAFT but was traded later to CHRIS WEBBER by the ORLANDO MAGIC along with 3 players. In his stint in the NBA, Penny is a 4-time All-star, 3-time All-NBA Selection, 1994 All-Rookie First Team, 1994 Rookie Game MVP and Runner Up to Chris Webber in Rookie of the Year Award. He was known for his notorious passing skills with the height of 6'7 similar to MAGIC JOHNSON who is 6'9, which in the NBA they were considered to be the biggest point guards ever to play in the NBA.

Penny is also known to be one of the famous athletes of NIKE wherein the AIR PENNY SIGNATURE SHOES is one of the best selling signature sneaker line of NIKE, other than the JORDAN Series.

In celebration of the AIR PENNY signature series NIKE has come up with the idea and fused all the silhouettes of AIR PENNY Shoes and the FOAMPOSITE (which is also Penny's Exclusive Shoe but not a part of the series) and created the "NIKE 1/2 CENT"

lets take a look at all the AIR PENNY Series, THE FOAMPOSITE, NIKE 1/2 CENT and some PE EXCLUSIVES for PENNY HARDAWAY :
